Hey!!
Search engine optimization courses, SEO, Google rankings, and on and on. There is probably nothing more prevalent in the minds of website owners today than this all important topic. In fact, whenever I have mentioned to someone that my company is a marketing firm, and that we are not limited to, but strongly focus on internet marketing, I invariably hear, "Oh, you mean SEO?"
This possibly stems from the fact that although more widely accepted, online marketing is still something of a foggy concept for a lot of entrepreneurs, especially those whose businesses are not primarily internet based. Promoting ones self online is a hugely diverse concept. But what most people first think of is: "If I do a good job of optimizing my website, it'll draw traffic." And while this is true, is is hardly the end of the story.
To put it in simple terms, SEO is a very small piece of the online, and even the total, marketing pizza. It is, however, an important piece. So while this article does not have the room to go into every possible avenue of an online marketing campaign, or a traditional one, for that matter, we will focus on the beginnings, your website and SEO.
Before we get into specifics, let's briefly touch on an interesting point. Most of what we will talk about in this piece relates to everything you publish on the web. With the exception of your url, these tips will apply to your website, your blogs, your articles, your video posts, your forum interactions, and so on. Because any type of online content is searchable, both from within the places it's posted and from the big search engines too.
So let's dive into this topic now and work from the bottom up. In other words, from the least important things you can do that Google, Bing and Yahoo, among others look for and work our way to the topmost. To begin, let's talk about the little things you can do on your site to tweak it for SEO.
SEO Task #1 - The little things
Throughout the years of the internet, a lot of stuff has been thrown out there about all the SEO tricks you can do. Well, most of them are useless now. You see, Google always changes its search programming. The reason they do this is because they catch on to all those automated programs and underhanded tricks that people do to try to get attention. They do this to keep things as fair as possible. But there are still a few little things you should always do on every website you create.
Always use the "alt" attribute on your image tags. Give the image a keyword friendly searchable title. The engines just don't display web pages, they can also search solely for images, videos and the like. The alt attribute, and for text links, the title attribute, are great places to put keywords into your content. Not to mention they help with those users who are using speech software to read your content.
Another little trick is to name your website pages using long tail keywords. Long tail keywords are those that are three words or more, search phrases, if you will. These words in a filename, separated by hyphens, get good attention, because not only are they readable directly in the website's folders, but they appear in the links on the pages too. So, for example, instead of having an "about us" page, called about.html, why not name it: quality-medical-supply-mission-and-staff.html. It's long and tedious, but who cares, it's just a link, and the engines will eat it up.
Finally, no matter what kind of site you have, even if you're using Flash or graphical navigation, always have text-based navigation links. Use your pages' footer to put them if you have to. Search engines love these, and if it's possible, include a site map as well.
SEO Task #2 - Page content
This is one that applies to everything. Because even posting a video on YouTube, you are required to fill in a description field. So Just like in a website, you can plug in keyword rich content. So no matter what, blogs, videos, articles, forum posts and of course your web pages, use rich, keyword content to attract the search engines.
Keep this in mind, however, write said content primarily for the reader, not for the search engines. For one, the engines can detect this and will disregard a blatant attempt to get their attention. Secondly, the people who you've actually gotten to your content will very quickly get irritated by the fact that it looks like nonsense written for a computer, and not a fluid, clear presentation to draw them in.
Remember, the object here it to attract a human and convert them from a viewer to a paying customer. So take the time to craft and present well-formed content. And embed the keywords into it in a natural, fluid way. Yes, this can be difficult, because this is one area where a talented writer can really make you shine, so don't' be afraid to hire some help, or get your marketing consultant to write the content for you if you don't feel you have the skills. But you can still outline what you want to say for them. This will make it easier and cheaper.
SEO Task #3 - Page descriptions
When it comes to most other forms of online publishing, articles, videos, and the like, there is a special box for a description, as we've mentioned above. And it's important to craft a good one, one that will show up in searches. But here we will focus more on the actual description tag of your website's pages.
The tag with the name "description" is one of the most important things searched by the engines. And what's great about it is, there is really no limit on how long you can make this. Although you don't' want to write a novel here. Three to six or so long, keyword rich sentences should suffice.
Often, the description tag will show up in the searches as the description of your site, so this has a two pronged effect. First, you can craft something that is guaranteed to be read by the search engines. Secondly, it can also be displayed in the search so as to attract the attention of the searcher. So like your page content, you should take time to create page descriptions that are not only keyword rich, but readable too.
And one more brief note on descriptions, in your website, make the description meta tag unique to each page, no matter how many you have. So often, a search result will point to a page in your site where content is found, not always the home page.
SEO Task #4 - The Title
Here is one that is very important no matter where you are publishing something. A good, keyword rich searchable title is a must, this is almost the most important thing you can do for SEO.
When it comes to your website, the tag can be as long as you want, and does not have to be that readable by a human. Though it does appear in the top of the browser, anything over forty or fifty characters isn't visible anyway. So a good title might be something like: "Welcome to Great Stuffed Animals.com! Stuffed animals, plush toys, great deals, free shipping, kids, toys, valentine's day" So this title begins with something conversational for the visitor to see, but ends with a series of keywords.
Now, when it comes to creating titles for non-website based content, it gets a little more tricky. Because generally, the space they give you is very limited. So here you have to get creative. You have to make titles that will capture the attention of the searcher while at the same time being structured to show up in searches. It can be tough, but doing it right really pays off.
SEO Task #5 - Your URL
This is an idea that mostly applies to your website. Although, in some cases, setting up accounts with Facebook, YouTube and the like will allow you to set up what is known as a vanity URL, such as "facebook.com/mystorerocks" But in this section, we will focus only on the URL of your website.
Your website's URL, or domain name, is arguably the most important thing you can do for SEO. because a good URL, that is one that is essentially a popular search term for what you do, is the first thing the search engine tries to match when a search is entered.
So while most people want their business name, like wxyz.net to be their website, it would be better if, say, wxyz was a radio station, to get a domain name like "wxyzhitradiomiami.net" as the URL. This will be more likely to be a search term. Of course, this can be cumbersome to write, especially if it's something likeYikes, instant hand cramps, right?
So one thing you can do here is get a secondary URL that forwards to the long one, like, "lawns4u.com" which when typed in goes to the long one we typed above. But the key is that the long tail keyword URL can really get recognized quickly and draw a lot of attention. So when crafting yours, try to think of how your potential customers are looking for you, what their needs are, what they want, and craft a domain name that fits in with how they would search for you.
Hopefully you've gotten some good ideas here. This piece is hardly the alpha and omega of SEO, but it can give you some basic info to help you do the work yourself, or know what to ask about when talking to a professional, qualified marketing company.
